Canon Bio:
One of the best pilots to come from Earth, Shiro was the youngest pilot at the Garrison in his time as a Junior Officer. Shiro came across the young Keith Kogane on a recruiting mission to local schools and sponsored his enrollment after seeing his exceptional piloting skills in a simulator. During a mission to Pluto's moon Kerberos, he was captured with Samuel and Matthew Holt (the scientists heading the exploration) and thrown into the Gladiator arena with Matt. Since Matt was doomed to die in the arena, Shiro helped get him transferred to a different part of the Empire by purposefully injuring him thus rending him unable to fight.
It took a year for him to escape from his Galran captors, this done with the aid of a member of the Blades of Marmora. By the time of his escape he had lost an arm which left the Galra to replace the limb with a high-tech prosthetic.
As a Paladin of Voltron, he piloted the Black Lion and forged a very deep bond. Unfortunately, this was not enough to prevent him from dying during their big clash against Emperor Zarkon, but it did allow his conscience to be saved inside the infinite quintessence void powering Voltron and the Black Lion. It was only thanks to Allura that his conscience was transferred back into a physical form (one that had previously belonged to an evil clone made of his body by the witch Haggar).
Note: This Shiro does not follow the canonical plot to Season 8.
